WATCH: La Sista is Finally Back with “Freshy”
After more than two years of a musical hiatus, the Puerto Rican singer Maidel “La Sista” Canales is finally back! On Feb. 17, she released her highly-anticipated comeback single “Freshy.” The result? A drill-inspired track meshed with afrobeats and a perfect touch of reggaeton.
“With my life, thank you to everyone, which I can’t put into words…. I love you,” she wrote on Instagram. In the same video post, she says she wanted everyone to hear this song as soon as possible because people have been waiting for a long time. She also thanks her loyal fans who have left her endearing comments.
The new music video, directed by Marcel Rivera, features the fierce singer-songwriter laying down her verses at a strip club. We also see her selling jewelry. In another shot, she’s walking toward the camera in a luxurious white coat, showing how badass she is. Towards the middle of the track, the BPM does a 180 turn into a perreo-ready reggaeton track, completely changing the song’s direction. Afterward, it switches back to the drill-inspired melody we were first introduced to. The singer then says if you don’t remember her to look her up on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Reggaeton Songs of All Time” article.
Social media users across all social media platforms are excited about La Sista’s new era. A YouTube user, @lizandrariveramorales9611, wrote: “I’m extremely glad you’re back, although for me you’ve always been relevant. I loved it!??.” An Instagram user, vhtorrijos, wrote: “Wooooooow! ¡Desmadraste! This is the sista pá…. You did a great job. A little bit of history to educate yourselves. Cheers! ????.”
Though La Sista had been MIA, as she mentioned in the song, her legacy has been documented by Rolling Stone. Her 2007 hit “Destino Cruel” featuring Divino was placed at No. 39 on the magazine’s “100 Greatest Reggaeton Songs of All Time.”
