“Un Verano Sin Ti” Was a Huge Milestone – Even If Didn’t Win Album of the Year
It’s undeniable that Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti had a huge year. From topping charts and being the most-streamed artist globally, Bad Bunny’s last album was a huge success. However, despite his accolades, the album didn’t receive Album of the Year at this year’s Grammy awards.
Regardless of the result, Un Verano Sin Ti’s AOTY nomination was a huge milestone for Latines. It made history as the first-ever Spanish-language album to be nominated for it. The other A-list nominees included Adele’s 30, Beyoncé’s Renaissance, Kendrick Lamar’s Mr Morale & The Big Steppers, and Harry Styles’ Harry’s House. Styles ultimately won the award.
Other categories that the Puerto Rican icon was nominated for this year included Best Pop Solo Performance for “Moscow Mule,” which he lost to Adele’s “Easy on Me,” and Best Musica Urbana Album, for which he took home the Grammy. This marks the second time Benito has won in that category.
Fans have a lot to say about the category’s results. A Twitter user wrote: “I really thought it was Beyoncé or Bad Bunny. Un Verano Sin Ti – You know the most streamed album of the year? Smh.” Another Twitter user echoed the same sentiment: “I love harry styles, but how is Bad Bunny #1 on EVERY platform, he’s the most streamed artist Globally, but doesn’t win album of the year? Lmaoooo.”
Though he didn’t take home the top award, Benito represented our communities during the music’s biggest night’s opening act. He turned the Grammys into a merengue party by performing a verse of his epic Puerto Rican anthem, “El Apagón,” and continued with “Después de la Playa.” As speculated, the merengue composer Dahian El Apechao joined El Conejo Malo, which marked his debut on the Grammy stage.
Moving forward, Benito will be the first Latino to headline Coachella. He will be performing on the festival’s consecutive Friday nights (April 14 and 21). As far as new music goes, Benito released his most recent music video, “La Jumpa,” alongside Arcángel.
