WATCH: ‘Cobra Kai’ Announces Sixth & Final Season with Nostalgic Montage of Franchise

Fans of The Karate Kid franchise will get to step back into the dojo for a sixth and final season of the comedy-drama series Cobra Kai. Netflix made the announcement Friday morning (January 20).

When season 1 debuted on YouTube Red in 2018, it picked up 30 years after the events of the original trilogy of the 1980s (the “Miyagi-Verse”). This time, however, the narrative was from the perspective of the franchise’s main antagonist, Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).

Since its debut five years ago, Cobra Kai went on to be a surprise hit when it moved from its YouTube platform to Netflix for season 3 in January 2021. Over that time, Johnny and main protagonist Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) have had their ups and downs as both attempted to build their own dojo powerhouses in the San Fernando Valley.

“Reacquainting the world with The Karate Kid universe has been our humble honor,” said creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg in a written statement. “Making Cobra Kai has allowed us to join the same hallowed dojo once inhabited by the great Robert Mark Kamen, John Avildsen, Jerry Weintraub, and all the amazing original cast members. It has also enabled us to play sensei, expanding the original storylines and birthing a new generation of underdogs. We’ve never once taken this opportunity for granted.”

Netflix also released a teaser video for season 6 with highlights from the prior five seasons and the original trilogy. This includes clips of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita) and all the rivalries that have built up during Cobra Kai between young karate students like Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), who has become one of the most recognizable faces in the series and is set to star in the superhero movie Blue Beetle.

“We’ve been fighting so long – against each other, with each other – it’s hard to keep track,” Johnny says at the beginning of the trailer. “So, let me ask you – do you have one more fight left in you?”

The answer, of course, is a resounding, “Yes!”
