WATCH: Ibeyi Teams Up With Jorja Smith for Ethereal Single ‘Lavender & Red Roses’
Afro-Cuban and French twins Ibeyi have delivered an ethereal-electronica collaboration with the English singer-songwriter Jorja Smith on “Lavender & Red Roses,” released today (March 30). The ever-celestial “Lavender & Red Roses” is part of their highly-anticipated upcoming third album Spell 31 which is due on May 6.
The multi-faceted duo, formed by Lisa-Kaindé and Naomi Díaz, has released this Renaissance-inspired music video directed by Lucrecia Taormina, taking place in a desert landscape. Representing the three sisters of fate from Greek mythology — Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos — they attempt to save a distressed masked individual from a deep hole they’re in. Although the trio tries their best, they end up having to cut ties with the darkness. And once they do, they see lavender and roses emerge from the grave situation. They ultimately realize that the only person they can save is themselves.
“Clotho, Lachesis, Atropos are sisters, one of them creates the thread of fate, the other analyses it and the third one cuts it. ‘Lavender and Red Roses’ is a song about the feeling we all experience when we love someone troubled,” Lisa-Kaindé said about the music video via press release. “It could be a partner, a sibling, a parent, a friend. We wanted to talk about the pain of witnessing a loved one hurting, repeating patterns, and getting lost. And how it triggers in us the desire to reach them, hold them tight and wash their troubles away with lavender and red roses.”
She then continued: “But the truth is you can’t save them, if they pull you into their darkness, you will have to protect yourself, and allow them to find their own strength and light, their own way.”
The upcoming album Spell 31 will deliver 10 songs written, produced, and recorded by the duo, including the last single, “Sister 2 Sister,” which we’ve previously featured. The full project is described as a “path to restoration in pursuit of true harmony, healing, and magic.”
