Amanda Gorman Pays Homage to the Statue of Liberty at the 2021 Met Gala
The 2021 Met Gala is in full swing and social media is swirling with commentary on its American Fashion theme and lackluster red carpet appearances. Inaugural poet and Met Gala co-chair Amanda Gorman understood the assignment, though. She hit the red carpet in a dazzling blue Vera Wang dress with sequins and a light airy train. Amanda accessorized her look with a purse that quotes the Statue of Liberty. It doesn’t get much more American than that.
Amanda revealed that she wanted to incorporate her identity into the theme and chose to “repurpose” the quote at the base of the New York landmark. While chatting with KeKe Palmer and Ilana Glazer on the Met Gala live stream, Amanda said that she chose the Statue of Liberty because it holds a book that is “very on-brand” considering her talents as a poet. “I wanted my outfit to be about America welcoming the world,” she explained.
According to Amanda, “Fashion is like writing, it’s its own language.” When it comes to celebs she couldn’t wait to see, she said, “Rihana period.”
