Bad Bunny’s “Yonaguni” Named Fifth Most Tweeted-About Song in Summer 2021

Twitter just released their “Top 10 Summer 2021 Anthems” list, which ranks the songs that were most tweeted about from May 31 to August 18 in the U.S. From the list, it looks like a lone Latine performer has made the cut. Coming in as the fifth most tweeted-about song is Bad Bunny’s “Yonaguni.”

Bad Bunny’s song was released in early June. It refers to the Yonaguni Island in Japan. In the song, Bad Bunny sings about a woman he shouldn’t be thinking about but can’t help it. He tells her that he’ll travel to Yonaguni for her if she wants and runs down a list of things that he’s willing to do to steal her away from the guy she is currently dating.

“Y yo te compro un Banshee/Gucci, Givenchy/Un poodle, un frenchie/El pasto, lo’ muchie’/Te canto un mariachi/Me convierto en Itachi.” Bad Bunny even wraps up the song by singing some of the lyrics in Japanese. In the music video, during that section, he’s portrayed in anime form.

“Yonaguni” hit No. 1 on Billboard’s U.S. Hot Latin Songs while dominating the Billboard Latin Music Awards with 22 nominations. Joining Bad Bunny’s song, according to Twitter, was “Stay” by The Kid LAROI featuring Justin Bieber, “Industry Baby” by Lil Nas X featuring Jack Harlow, “Essence” by Wizkid featuring Tems and the remix featuring Beiber, and “Butter” by boy band BTS who is listed at No. 1.

Here are only a few examples of the tweets mentioning “Yonaguni” that were posted this summer:
