It was just a few months ago that the Internet’s art critics crawled out from beneath their keyboards, lampooning a series of Juergen Teller lensed portraits for W Magazine, featuring James Corden, Tessa Thompson, and Riz Ahmed. The shots were a little starker than Teller’s typically bare photographic style, inspiring a flurry of memes, with people sharing their own candid (read: terrible) photography, making claims on Teller’s work.
Yet whether man or meme, the photographer is responsible for some of the most iconic fashion photography of our time. See Victoria Beckham dangling legs akimbo out of a Marc Jacobs shopping bag, a pastel-haired Kate Moss poking out of a duvet, or an alabaster pale Vivienne Westwood gobbling the length of a banana. Now, he is the subject of Palace’s latest collaboration. Having worked with one another on various lookbooks in the past, this capsule sees images from Teller’s impressive back catalogue emblazoned across t-shirts, totes, and skateboards.
This includes photos of a frozen, dead dog taken from a bin in Czechoslovakia, and a slightly more glamorous nude of 90s supermodel Kristen McMenamy from a cover shoot for Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin. The collaboration showcases some never before seen self-portraits of Teller himself, too. Captured in one with cigarette in hand, proudly displaying a bulbous football ashtray (it’s coming home etc), there’s also a hoodie festooned with cig butts and fag ash for all the nicotine addicts out there.
The collection drops in Palace stores around the world from 11am on July 9. See more over on Palace’s website and click through the gallery above to see what’s in store.
