Olivia Rodrigo Wears the Ultimate ’90s Party Dress to Her ‘Sour Prom’
If there’s one thing Olivia Rodrigo knows how to get right, it’s an impeccable reference. Whether it’s harking back to the confessional lyrics and scuzzy guitars of her musical heroes like Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple; the nods to Jennifer’s Body and Japanese horror Audition in her Petra Collins-directed “good 4 u” video; or even the homage to Courtney Love’s 1994 Hole album Live Through This she paid in the promo shots for the “Sour Prom” concert film she debuted this week, Rodrigo always hits the bulls-eye.
And while celebrating the success of her “Sour Prom” on Wednesday, Rodrigo made another pitch-perfect tribute to a pop culture moment from decades past—this time, through her style. Posting a snap from her afterparty on the roof of a Los Angeles parking lot, Rodrigo not only posed with a starry lineup of friends (including musician Conan Gray and actor Iris Apatow) in an adorable riff on the classic high school prom pic, but also paused to pull shapes in the ultimate ’90s party look: a pastel-pink Betsey Johnson mini dress.
The delightful vintage piece from Johnson’s archives featured subtle floral print and hot pink lace trims that were carefully offset by Rodrigo and her stylists, Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, with a pair of sparkly baby blue heels, providing a perfectly Y2K color clash. And while the accessories were equally lovely—in particular, the floral corsage Rodrigo wore as a bracelet—it was the cheeky pair of pom-pom pigtails that felt like the perfect final nod to Rodrigo’s beloved decade. In an interview with Vogue in May, she noted “I wish I could be a teenager in the ’90s, because that’s my favorite music ever.” Clearly, Olivia Rodrigo’s love affair for the ’90s is one of both substance and style.
