We Asked Our Editors Which Pieces of Jewelry They Never Take Off
Sure, accessories are meant to be swapped in and out, but what about those pieces of jewelry that never leave your body? We call it everyday jewelry here at Vogue—a silver or gold little something that finishes off just about every one of our outfits. Whether it’s a sentimental necklace to remind us of our loved ones or a playful ring that brings joy to our days, these tried-and-true jewels are the backbone of our wardrobes.
Some of these beloved trinkets are so delightful my colleagues actually rarely leave the house without them. That’s totally understandable given the versatility of classic jewelry—it pairs well with nearly anything, from jeans and a T-shirt to a summery maxi dress. Ahead, you’ll get a closer look at the everyday jewelry essentials Vogue editors love.

I love minimalist gold jewelry and my favorite ones as of late are from Laura Lombardi. She makes timeless pieces that still pack a statement, without being over-the-top to wear every day. I recently received this necklace and earrings set as a birthday gift, and I can’t stop wearing them.

When my son was born I began wearing this Jennifer Meyer necklace with his initial on it, and I haven’t taken it off in two and a half years! I added a second one when my daughter was born—a gift from my husband. It’s a way I keep them close to my heart even when we are apart.

I have never been someone who piles on stacks of bangles or necklaces. I much prefer to keep my jewelry streamlined, and I rarely wear anything that does not have personal meaning to me. I regularly wear this Cartier watch, which my parents generously gave me as a graduation gift. I think jewelry carries energy, and this watch radiates happiness and opportunity to me.

I love delicate jewels that also make a subtle statement for everyday wear. That’s why I eat, sleep, and shower in my Bulgari Fiorever necklace. And my go-to earrings are Missoma Baya hoops—they look good with everything.

My boyfriend got me a silver Mejuri ring for our anniversary a few years ago. I love that it’s a chunkier band—actually named the boyfriend stacker—that feels like it was lifted from his closet. I also have some Agmes earrings, similar to this Patrice style, close by on my desk to throw on for any Zoom to spice up any item. They’re deceptively lightweight and make any outfit that much more interesting.

I have been wearing my dear friend Marie-Helene de Taillac’s jewelry for years now—or at least until a burglary divested me of it a couple of years ago—because A. It always reminds me of her. And B. It always reminds me of India, a country for which I have a deep passion.
Over the years, she made me such pieces as an amazing set of rose quartz lip-shaped cufflinks and dress-studs that I wore to the Costume Institute Gala for the Schiaparelli & Prada: Impossible Conversations in 2012. For more everyday jewelry, I loved the swivel ring, which was made for me with an amethyst stone at the center—mauve is my color, you know!

I consider “everyday jewels” as the jewelry I never take off. I wear at least two necklaces layered night and day, sun or snow—one with my daughter, my husband, and my initials on it; the other, a strand of opals, for good luck. For earrings, I have two piercings in one lobe, and three in the other. I keep stud earrings and very small huggie hoops in the second and third piercings and switch out my first piercings more often. All earrings are simple as I wear a lot of jewelry (hazard of the trade), so these pieces can’t fight for attention. For rings, the only thing I wear absolutely every day without fail is my wedding band, a thread-thin pavé diamond ring. I’m most likely to add a pinkie ring on my right hand if I do—both of my favorites were custom made, but here are two similar suggestions.
Virginia Smith, Fashion Director of Vogue
I never take off my Eva Fehren X ring or my Cartier trinity ring. They’re lightweight, and I don’t notice I have them on—they also look great together.

I really can’t stop wearing a pair of pearl drop John Hardy earrings that are sprinkled with diamonds—they’ve really become an extension of my ear at this point. I received them as a gift two years ago and think the combination of its gold-tone and small-scale make them the perfect finish to just about any look. They’re an earring that transcends trends, but should I want to switch it up—though I really don’t need to!—these baby hoops from John Hardy would do the trick.

I’m usually an earrings girl, but lately, all I’ve been wearing are rings. I don’t ever leave the house without my Initial ring from Mateo and my smiley ring from Vitaly. Nothing like a bit of sparkle to start your day!
