New Latin Wave Festival Returns This Weekend, Here Is the Full Rundown
Multi-disciplinary arts festival New Latin Wave is kicking off week-long activities starting Saturday, March 6, where they’ll bring their usual cavalcade of film screenings, musical performances, avant installations, and poignant talks into a digital space. This year’s edition will explore the many ways Latinx visionaries have adapted to logistical and creative challenges in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the virtual format makes the New York City festival globally accessible for the first time.
Opening day programming includes a Salon Session with soulful experimentalist Xenia Rubinos, a performance of socially charged Chilean play Las Nanas presented by LaMicro Theater, and a happy hour featuring mixologist Julio Xoxocotla with a vinyl DJ set by Radio Ramsés. Over the course of the week you can also tune in for conversations on Latinx film with media arts organizations Cinema Tropical and Latin Reels, and art book fair curated by Gonzalo Guerrero of Secret Riso Club, and a video edition of the Bag Ladiez podcast. For more politically inclined discussions, author Melissa Saenz Gordon will moderate a panel unpacking the greater implications of her essay We Need More Creatives In Politics, while New York Times’s Yvette Verde leads a conversation on demystifying the Latinx Vote.
Most of New Latin Wave’s 2021 activities will be free to the public, while select features will be accessible with the one-time purchase of a $10 ticket. An exclusive interview with superstar Mon Laferte will dive into her growing visual arts work, as well as her gallery initiative in Tepoztlán, Mexico. Patrons will also gain access to a screening of El Viaje de la Monalisa, a documentary exploring themes of immigration and sex work, as well as a live comedy show hosted by Zilla Vodnas.
