The elusive designer will exhibit previously-unseen work in Paris later this year

Martin Margiela has announced his return with a new, self-titled exhibition. Stopping short of a return to the world of fashion, Martin Margiela will showcase the elusive designer’s work as an artist, featuring a collection of previously-unseen works.

Specifically, the exhibition – which is set to open at the Parisian gallery Lafayette Anticipations later this year, on April 15 – comprises sculptures, photographs, and installations by Margiela.

“This exhibition celebrates the idea that Martin Margiela has always been an artist,” says Lafayette Anticipations in a statement, adding that he: “has always made us look at things with fresh eyes. Going against the grain he cultivated an obsession for discreet people, abandoned objects and forgotten places and events, bestowing on them a new dignity.”

Margiela himself has kept a famously low profile, despite becoming one of fashion’s most influential figures. Accordingly, he’s remained an enigma since leaving his eponymous label in 2009, though he does lend his voice to the aptly-titled 2019 documentary Martin Margiela: In His Own Words.

Directed by Reiner Holzemer, who also brought us the Dries Van Noten documentary, the film landed on UK screens (and Pornhub) in 2020, giving a rare insight into his childhood, long-lasting anonymity, and inspirations, with additional input from former mentor Jean Paul Gaultier. Martin Margiela will show at Lafayette Anticipations from April 15 – July 25, 2021.
