February 2020: Top 5 Music Video Releases
Lady Gaga-Stupid Love
Lady Gaga, aka Mother Monster, is known to be one of the biggest pop artists in the world. Each of her songs and music videos are filled with energy, attitude, self-confidence, artistry, and color. This month, Gaga blessed us yet again by releasing another colorful and enthusiastic music video called, “Stupid Love.” The song revisits the message and musicality of “Born This Way,” which was the Pride anthem of 2011. While the world is divided into two, she delivers the idea of loving ourselves and one another for who we are and what we stand for. Australian director Daniel Askill, shot the entire music video on an iPhone 11 Pro, displaying tightly choreographed dancers and Gaga in pink Barbarella gear as she plays a peacemaker during the dance battle. The euphoric video suggests that music like this can heal the world’s cracks. While you’re dancing around and feeling good, you’re somehow able to escape the world’s problems just for a few short moments.
Anne-Marie-Birthday
Anne-Marie still has a few months till her birthday arrives, but that doesn’t mean she can’t celebrate a little bit early. Her new bubble gum pink music video for “Birthday,” directed by Lux David with a creative twist by Kate Moross, is an homage to Cinderella. Wearing a classic cotton candy pink princess gown, the blonde bombshell is shown celebrating her birthday by dancing and gliding through the hallways of a luxurious mansion. Suitably, the visual captures the singer dying her hair a perfect shade of pink to match the beautiful scenery. At the brush of midnight, Anne-Marie rushes back home to continue the festivities with her energetic group of friends. Known for her upbeat cheeky vocals and empowering break-up songs, the creative and strategic music video portrays the blonde beauty spending her birthday by celebrating her strong and empowered self!
Orrin-By My Side
Orrin, a Brooklyn-based rapper, who claims he is half-human half-robot, just released a new psychedelic and futuristic music video called “By My Side.” His ultimate vision of creativity and his unique imagination differentiates him from many Hip-Hop artists in the field. Getting the feeling that we are stuck in an Outerspace phenomenon, the sci-fi themed visuals in “By My Side” explains a mysterious root of cyborg and how this immortality has mandated itself a mission to save Hip-Hop and the human race from their own termination. The supernatural visuals experience has an electric and unique take on creating a music video as it has become a recent Hip-Hop smash in a very short amount of time. The sci-fi themed music video is like a little treasure that captures the futuristic societal dilemmas of our world today.
Harry Styles-Falling
In the emotionally raw Dave Meyers directed music video, a gloomy Styles sets a crystal glass of whiskey on top of his vintage piano while he starts to grace us with his raspy voice. As the song begins, Styles starts to play the piano and as the song progresses, the piano starts to overflow with water. Soon the entire room becomes an ocean. A short while later, Styles finds himself underwater feeling the heaviness of his emotions and feelings take over him. In the music video, a saddened Harry has just gone through a breakup and he is falling into the deep. However, he isn’t drowning. It is as if he was expecting his relationship to end this way. As time went on in his relationship, his metaphoric cup was filling, and soon overflown. “Falling” is definitely a heartbreaking masterpiece by the one and only, Harry Styles.
Taylor Swift-The Man
Taylor Swift has done it again. Her performative feminist song “The Man,” shows her as an incredibly wealthy white man instead of an incredibly wealthy white woman. Known for her very illustrative music videos, Swift is notorious for using her work to stage those who have done her wrong. And especially in “The Man,” Swift takes an aim at the male double standards while taking a swing at some famous men in the industry. Taylor Swift’s male alter-ego, Tyler Swift, freakishly looks like Jake Gyllenhaal which is a hit at the fact that Taylor and Jake were reportedly dating back in 2010. She also captures how Leonardo DiCaprio likes to party with women on fancy yachts! However, she has been criticized for her dating history in the past. At the end of the music video, Tyler asks Taylor, who is the director of the music video, how he performed? Swift responds, “Pretty good. But could you try to be sexier – maybe more likable – this time?” Taylor then compliments the ballgirl for just hanging out and sitting in the corner during the video. This is a reminder that men usually get praised by other men while women are judged for not wearing the right kinds of clothing.
