From updated classics to new icons, the denim label that counts Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner as fans debuts its new-season offering

Logging on to the internet to scope out the perfect pair of jeans can be an unnerving experience. From high street to high-end, bootcut to boyish, and indigo to that perfect, lived-in stonewash, the options are endless and expansive – but, of course, not all denim is created equal. Rising out of New York in 2011 came disruptive denim label 3×1 NYC – or ‘three by one’ if you’re saying it out loud.

Founded by designer Scott Morrison, 3×1 NYC is all about getting people to think differently about denim, and celebrating the versatility of the world’s most widespread material. Through unparalleled craftsmanship, a commitment to sustainability, and a vast line-up of authentic (and fashion forward) fits, the brand is now stocked globally, with all styles handmade in Milan. Needless to say it’s come a long way from its OG roots in a little enclave of NY’s SoHo district – though the values at its heart remain steadfast.

Now, as summer comes to an end and the biting chill of autumn closes in, 3×1 NYC is getting set to release its AW22 offering. Core styles that have found fans in the likes of Kendall Jenner and Bella and Gigi Hadid are reworked for the new season. Signature styles like the label’s classic Diana and Maya silhouette are updated for greater comfort and fit through new, innovative fabrications, while the Tom Boy is introduced with a ready-rolled hem (ideal for showing off the autumn’s hottest shoes).

At the more directional end of the scale, there’s also a nod to the cargo pant trend that’s currently taking over social media and street style shots alike, as the Sabina cargo lands a new iteration for the coming months. And for those who like to keep things baggy, without the bulk that pockets can add, there’s the wide-legged Helix Flip jean, with its striking stitched detailing and relaxed silhouette.

Don’t think 3×1 NYC’s AW22 offering stops at denim, though. The collection is rounded off with a small but perfectly formed edit of ready-to-wear looks in the form of the cosy Unusual fleece, which is crafted from a techy and uber-sturdy material called matelassé, the oversized, utilitarian Stefy shirt, and the Rosie vest, which channels denim’s rebellious spirit and countercultural roots through its boxy silhouette and cut-off sleeves. There’s also glossy, buttery leather, too, as seen across inky-black slim-fit trousers and slit-to-the-thigh pencil skirts for those after something a little more vampy.

With the fashion industry increasingly under fire for its detrimental impact on the planet, 3×1 NYC AW22 also doubles down on its commitment to becoming a more sustainable business. From meticulous hand-dying, to its use of recycled and repurposed denim and fibres, to its pioneering collaboration with future-facing Milanese mill Candiani, the label is intent on creating a more circular economy within the world of denim. “We constantly scout for the best denim canvases and washings, purposefully designing our garments to make them comfortable, stylish, resistant,” says 3×1 NYC CEO Juan Piani. “We handmake all our products in Milan to make sure that our clients have the best denim to support them with their lives.”
